If you’re going to make jokes about yourself and the preparation of the speech, make sure you keep it short and sweet. This guy plays it perfectly, dropping in a great line after a short fake anecdote and that’s that.

“I’m a bit nervous; I remember in preparing for this speech I rehearsed it a number of times to make sure I got it right. I actually rehearsed this in front of an audience at a local old people’s home…and they pissed themselves.”

With this joke so early into the speech he snaps the audience into attention very quickly. This works well because he actually seems a bit nervous; maybe he’s acting, or perhaps he just winged it. Either way, if you think you will be a little shaky on the day then try to point that out at the start with a joke like this. The audience will be much more forgiving. You’ll even be able to get away with material that is a little cruder, like this example -

“When Ian asked me to write a speech for his wedding he told me to keep it tight. I’ll be honest with you; I’m so nervous right now that’s not going to be a problem”.
