This Best Man starts by mocking himself as if he misunderstood the idea of two people getting married, and his delivery is the key to making this line work.

“Thanks everyone for being here. When Ian and Courtney first told me they were getting married I thought oh great…two weddings!”

If this guy doesn’t sound genuinely annoyed at the idea of two weddings, the joke and his confused character isn’t believable, he’d just sound drunk. He also leaves a pause for the audience to quickly get the joke, whereas if he’d swiftly moved on it would’ve been overlooked. This whole package sets up the rest of the speech and creates a persona for you to play with. Here’s another possible joke you could throw in if you want to play the role of the dim-witted best man.

“I’ve had just a few minutes to prepare today’s speech having only written it this morning thanks to Ian. Look, if you say to me “I won’t be angry if you want to do a roast for me at my wedding”, don’t be surprised when I turn up with half a leg of lamb three Yorkshires and a jug of piping hot gravy.”.
